Pet City Mt Gravatt to Sell Family Business 67 Years On
On: 31 July 2024
After 67 years, Pet City Mt Gravatt – one of Brisbane’s longest-running pet shops, known for their vast range and passionate team – has announced their plans to sell the family-owned business. Ray White Commercial (CSR) have been engaged to sell the business and the adjoining tenanted real estate.
Pet City owner, Evio Contenati and his brother-in-law, Frank established Pet City in 1957. Evio’s daughter Kim confesses that it’s an emotional time for their family as she recalls fond memories of working at Pet City.
“I have fond memories of being at Pet City since I was a child. And we’ve come a long way, over the years receiving some of the highest awards from the Pet Industry Association of Australia. We’ve also been commended by many community groups we’ve supported. It’s just so nice to give back to this local community that has brought us so much joy over the years.”
After almost seven decades, Kim and her family have decided it’s time for a new chapter, as the family focuses on looking after Evio, now in his nineties.
“The decision has not been taken lightly at all, and sadly the time has come as a family to take care of our dad, Evio.”

With an extensive aquarium department, and residents including snakes, lizards, guinea pigs, mice and birds, Pet City is affectionately known as the ‘free zoo’. During the school holidays, in particular, Kim says Pet City is brimming with excited families visiting the store’s unique range of pets.
But above all else, Pet City is best known for the passion and knowledge of its team. Pet City employs 35 staff with specialists in every department including their bird & reptile, aquarium, small pets and online departments. Their specialist knowledge allows them to share invaluable advice with both new and experienced pet owners in all areas of pet care.
Kim reminisces about a Pet City customer she spoke to recently, “They had been shopping with us for 15 years, and when asked why they kept returning, their response was ‘The Staff! They know my dog’s name, they’re friendly and knowledgeable and it’s a great feeling walking in. The VIP club also offers great savings.’”
The Contenati family hopes that a new owner can breathe fresh life into the business and carry its legacy into the future whilst maintaining the same high calibre of staff and offering the same exceptional service.
Pet City Mt Gravatt has been providing an invaluable service to pet owners for over 67 years.
A multi-award winner in the pet industry, Pet City Mt Gravatt carries a huge range of pet products rarely found in one store and is also a fully accredited member of the PIAA (The Pet Industry Association of Australia).
The store pioneered the concept of a complete pet care centre and the practice of employing specialist staff for each section. With over 35 staff in specific areas, Pet City Mt Gravatt is equipped to provide all customers with expert knowledge and advice.
Pet City Mt Gravatt is a complete pet department store and has been leading the way in pet responsibility for decades. The store incorporates live animals for sale – with an extensive aquarium department with both marine and freshwater species, guinea pigs, mice, birds, reptiles and even unusual pets like spiders and scorpions, just to name a few.
