Why do reptiles need UV lighting?
Reptiles are cold-blooded or ‘ectothermic’ animals, meaning they are dependent on external sources of heat to maintain their internal body temperature. In the wild, they warm up by basking in the sun, and cool down by hiding in shady areas. Pet reptiles typically live in indoor enclosures and are unable to seek out external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. This is why providing a source of UV light is essential for your pet’s wellbeing.
How far should UV lights be placed from reptiles?
It’s generally recommended to position UV lights between 6 and 12 inches above your reptile’s basking spot, but you should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for product-specific recommendations. You should also monitor your pet’s behaviour and appearance for any signs of discomfort or stress, such as intentional hiding or abnormal colouration, which may indicate that the lighting is too strong or not strong enough. In these instances, adjusting the distance between the UV light/s and your reptile’s habitat can enhance your pet’s comfort and wellbeing.
